But when I sit and feel into it, these feelings and the fearful energy vibration subsides. It doesn't actually ever take long. A few breaths. And I start to embrace the things I fear – fear of the outcome, the unknown, the things I simply cannot control. I loosen my grip and realise I much rather keep a playful open heart and trust. It's a feeling of compassion and kindness, which for me equals COURAGE.

I have created a NEW Kids Yoga Class that is available to download for FREE. There are so many opinions and influences about diet. I think it's necessary to rely more on your own intuition, in combination with experts and science you resonate with. We are each so unique and in such different circumstances, that there is no one right diet.

I remember when I was asked to bring dessert for the big family christmas lunch a couple of years ago... I made it gluten free, dairy free, sugar free. I thought it was delicious. Most of the cake came back home with me!!!

So for my husbands birthday and our wedding anniversary I made sure to up my game and stun everyone with something really special, and still "healthy".

Ingredients:

CAKE: 2,5 cups almond flour 1/2 cup coconut flour ¾ cup raw cacao powder 1/2 cup raw coconut palm sugar 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt ½ cup coconut oil, melted 1 cup organic coconut milk, full fat 3 large eggs 2 teaspoons natural organic vanilla extract 2 tablespoons raw honey

MIDDLE LAYER CHOCOLATE GANACHE*: 1 can organic full fat coconut milk 2 tablespoons raw honey 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder ½ teaspoon natural organic vanilla extract

CHOCOLATE FROSTING: 6 tablespoons coconut milk, full fat ¾ cup dark chocolate

Instructions:

CAKE: Preheat oven at 175°c. Grease the bottom and sides of a cake pan with coconut oil and coat with LSA mix. Mix together the almond flour, coconut flour, raw cacao powder, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl mix the eggs and raw coconut palm sugar, later add the coconut oil, coconut milk, vanilla and honey. Gently mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, approximately 45-50 minutes. If you feel you need to cook it longer, cover cake with aluminum foil to prevent burning the top and lower the heat. Let cake cool completely, then cut horizontally in the middle. Spread the chocolate ganache over the bottom half of the cake. Top with other half, then spread the chocolate frosting over the top and sides of the cake. Decorate with raspberries and sprinkle top with shaved white chocolate if desired.

MIDDLE LAYER CHOCOLATE GANACHE: In a saucepan, bring the coconut milk and honey to a light boil. Simmer on low heat for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Do not cover the pan. You will know you cooked it long enough when the coconut milk is reduced to half and has a thicker consistency and darker colour, similar to sweetened condensed milk. Mix in the raw cacao powder and vanilla extract and stir until all is combined and smooth, let it cool until cake is ready.

CHOCOLATE FROSTING: Heat up coconut milk and then melt the chocolate in a bowl over simmering water until all is combined and smooth. Let cool for 5 minutes before icing the cake.

Here you have the result! And let me tell you it was a BIG hit!

Lots of "oh wow", "yum", "Mmmm". And nothing left over!

Mother Nature is a Life Source, not a Resource

Autumn for me is an amazing time of the year to feel the power of nature and be guided to follow it's circle of change. Zen Collective is hired for another event and I felt it gave us the perfect opportunity on MOTHERS DAY to actually connect deeper with the energy from Mother Nature herself. I am a strong believer in that we all need to fall in love with nature and we definitely need to pass that on to our children, so that they will look after this planet in the future. Love is the ultimate renewable resource! Children seem to now a days recognise more corporate logos, but fewer plants native to their region and land. The mindful and present experience of calming your mind, finding perhaps some space and pauses between your thoughts, will give you higher consciousness and new insights. The sense of peace gained through being on the mat, have a big effect on your creative expression.

What is creativity for you?

For me it is everything in life. Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun!

Many moons ago, in my mid 20s, I ventured off to Denmark to participate in a 10-day meditation retreat called Vipassana. The name means 'to see things as they really are', and is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. It was rediscovered by Gotama Buddha more than 2500 years ago. The technique taught is all about the observation of breath and bodily sensations and through the interconnection of body-mind become more clear of one's thoughts, feelings and judgements. Eventually (hopefully) resulting in a balanced mind full of love, peace and compassion.

Anyway, so I had a fairly playful attitude towards the whole experience but I remember after the first day of 6 hours of meditation, thinking "I will be bored out of my brain doing this for another 9 days!!"

It kind of worked exactly in that way. But on the contrary I also discovered the opposite to boredom, I remember being totally intrigued and fascinated by how free and interesting my non-thinking mind was.

So although I didn't sustain that level of peace for more than a day or so after leaving the retreat, I feel that when the body, mind and spirit are in harmony, our creativity flows with great clarity.

Yoga encourages me to be real. It helps me to connect with my true feelings and my deepest self. It also pushes me out of my comfort zone and makes me face my fears. If you ever try standing on your head, or twisting your body into interesting shapes, you will know it has an effect on your brain and your sense of yourself. We must realise that children are no different. They are even more receptive and open. So don't let anxiety or fear of failure or not getting it right, cripple your or you children's creativity.

Our YOGA & ART WORKSHOPS are the perfect opportunities to feel fully supported in the process of both yoga practise and creative art.

Here is a video so you can have a look at what we do:

BOOK A SPOT AT OUR YOGA & ART WORKSHOP

Namaste x Pia

Back to School's 1-2-3 Confidence, Happy Tummies and sufficient Zzzz's

The "Back to School" season is in full swing. ... You know how bad certain foods can make you feel when you eat them. Yes me too.

If you can be a role model for healthy eating and encourage your child and teen to make healthy food choices along with you, establishing a bas of healthy eating in youth, they will always come back to what is natural and healthy, because it feels so good. It doesn't have to be drastic but by making small changes, before you know it, everyone in the family will be healthier and happier for it.

Here is a super delicious and healthy snack I made today while thinking and processing (no not at all procrastinating!!!) of getting all the administration work done.

QUICK & EASY YUM-CUPS

3/4 cup pitted dates

1 banana

1/2 cup blueberries

1 egg

2 tbsp oil (coconut/rice bran..)

I cup oats

1 cup spelt flour

A handful of walnuts (skip for nut-free), sunflower seeds, shredded coconut.

Plus some sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds for garnish!

"Mix dates, banana and blueberries in processor until fairly smooth. Add the egg + oil and mix. Add the dry ingredients and mix but without chopping up too finely.

Scoop into a mini cupcake tray and sprinkle with sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds. I am sure they can also be baked as a bar or cookies (but won't go crunchy). In the middle of oven 175 degrees for 15-20 mins, keep and eye on them."

3.

Just one more thing on this topic!!! I don't know about You but in our household we certainly are having to work pretty hard to break away from the Summer School Holiday bedtime, or rather lack OF bedtime routine! The kids still want to stay up late, kick the soccer ball or skate at 8pm!!

How do you think SLEEP impacts on self-confidence?

Lack of sleep increases the odds of feeling overly sensitive... A friend that doesn’t want to play, leading to feelings of fear or frustration, and self-doubt... There’s a direct link between lack of sleep and behavioural in children – one study in Israel showed that losing just one hour a night can lower a child’s IQ. Many school-age children, especially teens, are sleep-deprived.

Please visit the event page to the details for the upcoming DREAMTIME YOGA workshop for all 5-12 year olds. Research also shows that one of the keys to a meaningful and joyful life is feeling part of something bigger than ourselves! In the upcoming YOGA & ART Workshop on Tuesday 24th + Wednesday 25th of January, THIS will be the topic, and Carly from Art&Co and myself have created a program that is designed to help the children develop empathy, positive relationships and cultivate the skills needed to connect with others. One potentially powerful positive emotion that might just help our children to develop empathy is AWE. I personally find that "being in awe of something" makes me feel very small and like I am in the presence of something greater than myself. I also may lose awareness of my “self” and feel more connected to the world around me. This often happens in nature. But also through music or by witnessing inner strength of a great soul... OR experience an inspiring work of art! Yes, that is why you are invited to come and be in awe of what the children at our workshop will have created together, make an offer and know that the money goes to a charity chosen by the children, helping other children. All for the cause of putting them on a path to a life lived in compassionate connection with others. Awesome!

Everybody is welcome to the auction, wether you have children participating in the workshops or not. Instructor Pia O’Connor believes the many positive values of yoga that support self-growth and encourage self-care, kindness and responsibility – are all wonderful basis for family life.

“It’s very heart warming to see parents use yoga as a way to spend quality time with their children and teens. I love when dads come with their teenage daughter for example. We have even had a few grandparents joining in which is an incredible addition to a family yoga session. It really is for everyone, no one to young – no one too old.”

I would love for the families that come to our classes to feels a sense of community, that it truly is an all inclusive environment and everybody work from their own abilities. At the same time I will make sure they get a good workout and build some healthy strength and flexibility.

No previous yoga experience is required, but a willingness to have fun is a must! We mix the mindfulness, breathing exercises and focus up with lots of games and light heartedness. There is always lots of great belly laughing! Partner exercises as well as some acro-yoga is not uncommon in Young Yogis Family Sessions. There could also be moments of quite chats between each family unit to deepen their intimate experience. A lovely massage before relaxation is pretty much a standard. When in relaxation, family members are free to snuggle up under blankets that are available.

“One memory stays with me, Pia says, of a dad telling me his son hardly ever showed affection towards him and how amazed he was that he wanted to snuggle at the end of the first yoga class they attended.”

“Any healthy activity that families can undertake together is a blessing in this day and age, and Family yoga is the perfect start to our Sunday mornings. A thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience for my children and I." says another parent.

Yoga can be done everywhere at anytime, no special clothing is required, not even a yoga mat. You can do family yoga in the park or on the beach. If you are wanting to establish a routine at home, I would recommend starting lightly with short but frequent sessions, 10-15 mins a few times a week. It can include just a couple different poses in the morning you have learnt, or a breathing excise or massage before bedtime. Young Yogis will have lots of helpful links for families on the new website.
